Your class for the students at the Missouri Eastern Correctional Center should run as similarly as possible to the course you would teach on Danforth Campus. That being said, the logistics at MECC are a bit different than those on Danforth Campus. Every semester, we appreciate the patience, flexibility, and creativity of our PEP faculty as they foster spaces of engaged learning at MECC.

Presenting PowerPoint Presentations

Please let us know as soon as possible whether or not you will be be using PowerPoint presentations during your class. The DOC prefers that you provide the PowerPoints for all course sessions 10 business days before the start of classes. However, if you need more time, we can transfer PowerPoints if we have them 10 business days before the class during which you would like to use them.

All PowerPoint and video material should be uploaded to the shared Box folder designated for your class. If PEP has not already invited you to a shared Box folder, please contact us.

Presenting Video in Class

You may want to show a video during your class.  If that is the case, please send a request (see template below).  Ten business days before you plan to show the video, please upload digital mp3 file of the video to your course or bring in the DVD to MECC.  The Deputy Warden will need to approve the video.

Dear Ms. Haslag,

I would like to show a video during my class [course name] on [date of when you plan to show video].  It is the [name of video] and I am showing it to [brief description of why it is being shown].

I have uploaded the file to PEP for them to transfer to your Google Drive for review and approval.  If the video is approved, would you be able to upload it to the classroom projector?

OR

I have left the DVD of the video in the MECC file cabinet in the file folder that bears my name.  Would you be able to retrieve it and approve it?  And, if it is approved, could you advise as to how I would be able to get it shown during my class?

Thank you for all your help in this.

Best,

Materials for Students

The Prison Education Project provides all course materials for our incarcerated students. At times, we have been able to obtain donations, which requires us to make early inquiries. Obviously, we understand that it may take some time to finalize your course materials. However, if you would like for us to order materials for your course, please give us as much notice as you are able.

In-Class Handouts

Over the years, we have developed a system of trust with MECC and the DOC. Based on this, they have allowed our professors to bring handouts to class. Therefore, we ask that you only hand out course material in class. If you have any handouts that you think may be questionable, please email (prisonedproject@wustl.edu) to double-check.

If you need additional supplies purchased for your students during the semester, please notify us to ensure the supplies are allowed and to handle distribution of the materials to students in the prison. There are detailed rules as to which school supplies are allowed, and we must always obtain advance permission from MECC.

School supplies are located in the Computer Lab Student File Cabinet

Please read the guidelines on distributing school supplies.

Course Textbooks

Please provide us with your course texts at least two months prior to the semester starting.  We will be soliciting this information from you, but you are welcome to provide it earlier.  If you have questions about whether a course text is appropriate, please let us know. Students are generally allowed to keep their books at the end of the semester.

Transferring Course Material to the MECC Computer Lab

You may want students to have access to PDF versions of book chapters, articles, or other digital material.  The students have access to a computer lab.  It does not have internet, but is able to open PDFs, PowerPoints, certain media files, etc.  If you would like material for your class uploaded to the Shared Folder in the computer lab, please let us know. We will need to get it at least 10 business days in advance to go through the approval and upload process.  All material for the computer lab should be uploaded to the shared Box folder designated for your class. If PEP has not already invited you to a shared Box folder, please contact us.

Course Readers

If you would like your students to use a course reader, we ask that you submit your reader for printing by December 1 for the spring semester, May 1 for the summer semester, and August 1 for the fall semester.
